Clifton-Clyde’s Sevy Wurtz – Track Poll Winner – Presented by Salina Regional Sports Medicine

As a junior, not many athletes around the state accomplish even half of the feats that Clifton-Clyde’s Sevy Wurtz has accomplished on the court and on the track.

Wurtz, who has been running since the age of six, has always been one of the top athletes in the state. As a young competitor, she qualified for the AAU Nationals, where she had the opportunity to showcase her skills on a larger stage. She competed in the 100-meter dash and earned an impressive second-place finish in the long jump at the national level.

The junior is the daughter of head coach Kieran Wurtz, who also coaches her in basketball, where she is quite dominant averaging 22.8 points per game, 5.8 rebounds per game, and three steals a game.

“I’m lucky to have my father as my coach,” Wurtz said. “He always pushes me to be my best and knows what I’m capable of. Coach Steinbrock is my sprinting coach and keeps me prepared with running and agility workouts.”

Wurtz has a different type of work ethic and mindset that has set her up for complete dominance and that is exactly what you see whenever she competes. The junior is coming off of a season where she won two individual state championships in the 100m, and long jump.

But of course, Wurtz has bigger plans for herself and the Eagles as she enters her junior track season.

“My personal goals for this season are to improve my PRs in all my events and place at the top at the state meet,” Wurtz said. “I want us to continue pushing each other in practice and working together to get better every day. We’ve won the Twin Valley League meet the past two years, so going for a three-peat would be an incredible achievement.”
