Salina South’s Gabe Wheelbarger – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Nex-Tech

The Salina South football team struggled to a 1-8 record last season, but returning linebacker Gabe Wheelbarger is excited about the Cougars’ chances for 2025.

“I’m excited about the potential of our team this year and all the support we have from fans,” Wheelbarger said. “The hope for my team is to be able to win the games where we know we have the talent plus make sure we are all still brothers at the end no matter what.”

Wheelbarger was a second team all-league selection last season for Salina South, but there was a part to his skillset that he struggled with.

“One thing I have struggled with was pass coverage at the linebacker position so during this summer I have made sure to practice more seven on seven work,” Wheelbarger said. “During this off season I have been to multiple camps and have been in the weight room every day.”

The 2025 season will likely be Wheelbarger’s last playing football, so he wants to make the most of it.

“After high school I plan on going into the work force while taking classes at Salina Tech for auto body repair,” Wheelbarger said.
