Salina Central’s Mark Vaughn – Coach of the Month – Presented by Salina Regional Sports Medicine

By Matt Browning

For the past three years, Salina Central head baseball coach Mark Vaughn has been on staff with the Mustangs, but now gets the chance to lead the program.

He has also been a volunteer assistant at Iowa Western CC and a graduate assistant at Arkansas Tech.

“I really enjoy teaching and coaching at Salina Central because of the positive work environment, as well as having the opportunity to help students reach their goals and succeed in different aspects of their lives,” Vaughn said. “I also graduated from Salina Central, so it is very cool to be back teaching and coaching at my alma mater.”

Being able to play, learn and then coach under longtime coach Dee Kozlow made the transition to being the head coach simpler.

“A specific memory that sticks out to me was being able to play for and then coach with Coach Kolzow who retired after last season,” Vaughn said. “It was very cool to be able to play for him when I was in high school and then being able to work alongside him.”

Vaughn has developed and worked on his philosophy over his time as an assistant.

“I would say my coaching philosophy is a mixture of developmental coaching, as well as emphasizing attitude and effort,” Vaughn said.
