Salina Central’s Azbey Peckham – Athlete Spotlight Presented By American Family, Jeff Wells

Being a senior, Salina Central’s Azbey Peckham understands her time with the Mustangs is drawing to a close. That is why she is willing to leave everything on the court this season.

“My personal goal is just to finish off my career on a high note and leave everything out there, because after this year there are no more chances,” Peckham said. “For my team, I want us to play together and find a cohesive offensive rhythm.”

Last season, Peckham averaged nine points and four rebounds, while being an honorable mention all-league selection. Improving her three-point shooting was her primary focus throughout the offseason.

“One area that I want to improve on this year is my three-point shooting,” Peckham said. “I have been focusing on my rhythm while shooting further away.”

Once her high school season concluded last March, Peckham wasted no time getting back on the court.

“After the season ended last year, I started playing with my club team,” Peckham said. “We travel to tournaments throughout the spring and summer months. Individual improvement is absolutely essential, but my favorite way to improve is to play in games, so I make sure to practice and compete in the off season.”

The rivalry between Salina Central and Salina South has been heated for decades and Peckham is looking forward to playing the Cougars for the final time this season.

“I always enjoy playing them, even more now that we only get to play them once a year in the regular season,” Peckham said. “They are fun to compete against, because there is that extra edge and more at stake when you are playing your rivals from your town.”
