Nickerson senior Rylan Morrell isn’t focused on individual accolades as he enters his final high school football season. Instead, the Panthers’ standout is embracing one last opportunity to compete alongside the teammates he’s grown up with while chasing a memorable postseason run.
“I’m really excited for my senior season because it’s my last ride with my guys,” Morrell said. “We’ve been grinding together for years, and I just want to go out there and leave everything on the field. I’ve been putting in a lot of work in the weight room and getting my body right, so I’m ready to see it all come together and help my team win games.”
Morrell returns after a productive junior campaign in which he carried the ball 156 times for 830 yards and seven touchdowns while averaging 5.3 yards per carry. He also made an impact on the defensive side of the ball with 38 tackles and four tackles for loss, showcasing the versatility that Nickerson will once again rely on this fall.
Determined to take another step as a senior, Morrell has attacked the offseason with a purpose.
“This offseason I’ve just been locked in,” he said. “I’ve been in the weight room getting stronger, doing speed and agility work, and going to team workouts every day. I’ve also been working on my position skills and conditioning so I can play fast and physical all game long.”
That work has centered on becoming a more explosive athlete, something Morrell believes can elevate every aspect of his game.
“One thing I really wanted to improve was my speed and explosiveness,” he said. “I’ve been doing a lot of sprint work, lifting heavy and doing agility drills to help me move better and play faster. I just want to be more explosive and make more plays this year.”
While Morrell has personal aspirations of posting the best season of his career and earning an opportunity to continue playing football after high school, his biggest goals revolve around the success of the Panthers.
“Individually, I just want to have my best season yet and keep getting better every week,” Morrell said. “I’m also hoping to get noticed and have a chance to play at the next level. As a team, we want to compete for a deep playoff run. Most importantly, we just want to play hard for each other every game.”
