After a summer filled with weightlifting, team camps and countless hours refining his game, Inman quarterback Malachi Brunk is eager to get back under the Friday night lights.
For Brunk, representing his hometown means more than simply playing football. It carries the responsibility of leading a program and a community that rallies behind the Teutons every fall.
“I’m excited to get back out on the field with my teammates after we’ve been grinding over the summer getting better,” Brunk said. “It means a lot to play quarterback for this town underneath the Friday night lights and to just represent Inman and the community. Also it’s super fun seeing all the young kids coming and supporting us.”
That commitment has been evident throughout the offseason. Brunk and his teammates have dedicated themselves to improving physically while also building chemistry before the season begins.
“We lift weights six times a week and we also get together to run plays or throw routes,” Brunk said. “Also we have gone to a couple team camps and scrimmaged other schools.”
While Brunk is already one of the state’s most accomplished dual-threat quarterbacks, he believes there is still room to grow. His primary focus has been becoming even more efficient through the air by sharpening both his mechanics and his connection with his receivers.
“I would like to improve on my accuracy and timing on routes,” Brunk said. “I’ve done this by throwing to my receivers more and working on my throwing mechanics.”
Those improvements could make an already dangerous offense even more explosive. Last season, Brunk accounted for 2,425 total yards, throwing for 1,089 yards and 10 touchdowns while rushing for 1,336 yards and 18 scores. He also made a significant impact on defense with 61 tackles and two interceptions.
His all-around production earned first-team All-League honors at both quarterback and defensive back, as well as first-team All-State recognition at both positions.
Despite the individual accolades, Brunk’s focus remains on team success.
“The goal as a team is to win the state championship and go undefeated,” Brunk said. “As an individual I want to be first team all state and all classes Top 11.”
