For Mag Cathey, the outdoors has always been more than a place to spend time. It has been a place to find peace.
According to Cathey’s mom, that connection began when Cathey was a toddler. Whenever Cathey became upset, going outside was a way to calm down and clear the mind.
“The great outdoors has always calmed me, according to my mom,” Cathey said. “From the time I was a toddler to now, if I was upset or I get upset, I go outside to calm myself down.”
That connection has continued to grow through the years. Cathey now enjoys the outdoors through a variety of activities, including hunting, fishing, welding and working on and driving derby cars.
For Cathey, the appeal of being outside comes down to one simple thing: peace and quiet.
“The outdoors is so appealing so I can have a quiet mind,” Cathey said.
Among Cathey’s favorite memories outdoors is one that combined competition and a meaningful personal connection. At a hometown demolition derby, Cathey met his girlfriend and later celebrated a major accomplishment by taking first place in the event.
That experience added another memorable chapter to Cathey’s relationship with the outdoors, where quiet moments, hobbies and important memories have continued to make an impact.
