Jacob Lewis knows that successful football programs aren’t built overnight. They’re built through consistency, accountability and a culture that carries from one season to the next.
That’s exactly what the Sterling standout linebacker is focused on as the Black Bears prepare for the upcoming season.
“The thing I’m most excited about is to continue building our culture with a new and different group of guys,” Lewis said. “We want to keep moving forward no matter who’s on the team.”
After putting together one of the most productive defensive seasons in Kansas last fall, Lewis has embraced the responsibility that comes with being one of Sterling’s veteran leaders. He led the state in tackles across all classifications with 174 total stops, including 101 solo tackles and 73 assists. He also recorded 15.5 tackles for loss, five fumble recoveries, three sacks and an interception while earning first-team HOA honors at linebacker.
Despite those impressive numbers, Lewis’ offseason focus has centered less on statistics and more on leadership.
“Becoming a more vocal leader on the team is definitely something I want to improve on,” Lewis said. “I’ve worked on that by interacting with my younger teammates and trying to boost their confidence and build them up.”
Sterling’s offseason program has emphasized both physical development and team chemistry. Lewis has been a regular participant in the Black Bears’ summer weightlifting, speed training and football practices, using every opportunity to prepare for another demanding season.
“Our team has weights and speed training sessions throughout the summer, and we also have football practice throughout the summer as well,” Lewis said.
While Lewis has already established himself as one of the state’s top defensive players, his goals for this season reflect a team-first mentality. Rather than chasing personal accolades, he’s focused on helping Sterling continue to improve each week. “My main individual goal is to do whatever my team needs to help us win games,” Lewis said. “Our team goal is to get better every day and be playing our best football in November.
